Although this volume is the result of a symposium it does not harbor the usual shortcomings of conference proceedings. The fourteen contributions are of high quality; most contributors can draw on their significant earlier research in the field of women's literature. The volume is divided into two parts. The first deals with general problems associated with novels by women; the second offers analyses of individual authors and works. The volume is a welcome - because more specialized - addition to the two-volume Deutsche Literatur von Frauen edited by Brinker-Gabler, which has quickly become a standard work for German literature by women.
