The lawyer for a fugitive war crimes suspect on Friday protested a European Union request that Gen. Ante Gotovina's assets and income be frozen, saying the move violates his human rights.
"It isn't clear to me how the government can freeze assets of a person whose guilt hasn't been proved and who hasn't acquired his property illegally," said Gotovina's attorney, Marin Ivanovic.
"We would resist the decision" in courts, Ivanovic told the state-run news agency HINA. He did not elaborate.
