Tokyo, Oct. 22 (Jiji Press)--Japan and the United States failed to reach agreement in their two-day talks here through Friday aimed at paving the way for the resumption of Japan's imports of U.S. beef, as they remained divided over how to determine the age of cows.
Senior working-level officials from the Japanese and U.S. governments will meet again Saturday morning to hold further talks on the beef issue, according to sources with access to the meeting.
The Japanese government banned imports of American beef immediately after the first U.S. case of mad cow disease, formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, was reported last December.
