LAS VEGAS - Patients with celiac disease have twice the risk of cancer as is seen in the general population, Dr. Peter Green reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
European studies have previously documented an association between cancer and celiac disease, but this is the first time that a U.S. study has shown an association. The risks were greatest for small-bowel adenocarcinoma, esophageal cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and melanoma.
