Successful implementation of contraception counseling in dermatology practice requires an awareness of simple but essential principles shown to have a direct impact on clinical outcomes, said Anne Marie Ruszkowski, R.N., director of nursing in the department of dermatology at Columbia University in New York.
"How patients perceive health care workers' attitude has been shown to directly affect compliance and the success of treatment," said Ms. Ruszkowski. "Factors that can increase the likelihood of successful treatment include a supportive interest in the patient, friendliness and consideration, the amount of time spent with the patient, and ensuring that the patient has a clear and complete understanding of the treatment regimen [Facilitating Treatment Adherence.
