Female patients can avail themselves of a wide variety of effective contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancy when using teratogenic or potentially teratogenic dermatologic drugs.

Every method of birth control is safer and more cost-effective than an unintended pregnancy, particularly when a teratogenic potential is factored in. "Half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended," said Howard Zacur, M.D., Ph.D., professor of gynecology and obstetrics at Johns Hopkins University. "The United States has the highest rate of adolescent pregnancies in the industrialized world. Unplanned pregnancies have physical and social consequences for mother and child and may result in exposure to teratogenic drugs."
