Clinician and patient adherence to a pregnancy prevention program helps avoid unintended pregnancy in the vast majority of women who use teratogenic dermatologic drugs, results of one manufacturer's program demonstrate.
Data from the Roche Pregnancy Exposure Database show that less than 1% of more than 800,000 women 12 to 49 years of age who were treated with Accutane (isotretinoin) have reported pregnancy just before or during treatment. Most of the pregnancies appeared to be unintended, as more than 90% of the women acknowledged being advised to avoid pregnancy during treatment with isotretinoin.
The pregnancy rate among women included in the database declined from 0.4% in 1989 to 0.3% in 1999 despite increased use of isotretinoin during the same time period.
