MUNICH -- Human skin produces antimicrobial peptides that form an innate epithelial chemical defense shield against infection, Dr. Jens M. Schroder said at the 10th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.

This phenomenon helps explain why skin infection isn't far more common in light of the fact that the epithelium is constantly covered by a vast number of microorganisms, added Dr. Schroder, professor of dermatology at the University of Kiel (Germany)....
