Party fortunes wax and wane depending on candidate strengths and the country's mood. But there have been some significant shifts in underlying geography as the House results below show. Over the past 40 years, Democrats have lost ground in the South and in the border states, while they have gained ground in New England. Ninety-eight percent of House members who seek re-election return to Congress. The proportion of House members winning by a very comfortable margin (60 percent or more) has increased.
