The Democratic Party's 2004 platform, issued shortly before the party's Boston convention, speaks of "immeasurably high" stakes going into the 2004 election. It paints a grim picture of America, in which "our great middle class is hard pressed," and "our alliances are frayed, our credibility in doubt." The platform, however, tempers this with a declaration that Democrats will "affirm our faith in the greatness of America."
