When I think of the best players in the NFL, I think of Peyton Manning. I think of Ray Lewis. I think of a handful of other guys. But the name I keep coming back to is Walter Jones.
I'm not the only one. Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren has told me more than once that if he were to start a franchise from scratch, the first player he'd take is Jones, his left tackle.
When I watch Jones--and I've seen every one of his plays this year--I'm mesmerized. He never gets beat. Not once this season has his man beat him. Shoot, the guy never even gets knocked to the ground. (OK, he hit the ground once when he fell over a pile.) And he does more than beat his man. He destroys him.
Physically, Jones is incredible. He's 6-5, 315, and every part of his body is thick and strong. Yet when he runs, he's light on his feet, and his balance is incredible. He has such great body control that he could have been one of the Flying Wallendas. Or a gymnast on a balance beam. I'm not kidding.
When the ball is snapped, Jones' left foot moves. Some guys are slow off the ball and have to catch up. Not Jones. He's never behind. His goal is to stop the pass rusher's feet by jamming him ...
