With Cingular Wireless L.L.C.'s pending $41 billion acquisition of AT&T Wireless Services Inc. nearing reality, interest is beginning to shift to how the nation's second- and third-largest wireless carriers will manage the enormous task of combining their well-defined operations into a single, coherent package.
Industry observers note the complex marriage will involve numerous steps that likely will drag on for years, but that both companies must hit the ground running on a handful of top priorities if they are to succeed. While they are unable to officially collaborate until the deal is closed due to competitive concerns, both companies are working together on some of these issues in what has been termed a "clean room.''
