Thanks to mesh technology, Wi-Fi offerings may be encroaching in WiMAX territory, since the wider area WiMAX is not set to take off for a few more years.

Players like BelAir Networks and Tropos Networks have extended the range of Wi-Fi, turning the previous in-building technology into a citywide offering by adding in the mesh component. Wi-Fi networks can have ranges between 75 and 150 feet within a home and office, while they can transmit at 1,000 feet or more outdoors. WiMAX is capable of transmitting within a 30-mile range.
