CANBERRA, March 28 Asia Pulse - The number of trade union members rose by 70,000 in the 12 months before the federal government gained control of the Senate, new figures show.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said there was a four per cent jump in union membership between August 2004 and August 2005, with the total number of members reaching 1.9 million.
