Massachusetts's Berklee College of Music is joining Essence magazine's Take Back the Music campaign to help encourage young artists who offer alternatives to violent and anti-women lyrics found in a lot of popular hip-hop music.
"Berklee is the leading contemporary music institution in the world, so it should be interested in the values and the musical production that come about in popular music," said professor Bill Banfield. "As an educational facility, Berklee would be interested in keeping a balance of the messages conveyed in hip-hop culture right now."
