A REPORTER or commentator has only to question some aspect of Israeli policy for one of its spokesmen or apologists to invoke the Holocaust. Somehow it is implied that criticism of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians instantly turns the critic into a Holocaust denier or an anti-Semite. This is, of course, nonsense. There are Jews who oppose the existence of Israel, others who argue that the Israelis have taken on the attributes of their oppressors. At the Eichmann trial, Hannah Arendt was momentarily embarrassed by the similarity of some Israeli legislation to the infamous Nuremberg laws.
