MICHAEL WHARTON, better ,known as the London Daily Telegraph s and Sunday Telegraph's Peter Simple, died on January 23, 2006, a little short of his ninety-third birthday, and three days after his last column was published. He had written his first, "with an appalling hangover", on New Year's Day, 1957. The Peter Simple column had been founded by his friend Colin Welch (who got him the job) on October 18, 1955. For thirty-three of those forty-nine years it appeared four times a week.
