The last "digital library" that I want to examine in this column is, perhaps, the one with the greatest potential--and, in my opinion, is the best marriage of the Web and book technology. Amazon has announced the development of two new services called "Amazon Pages" and "Amazon Upgrade." The services are scheduled for release in 2006, with no more specific date planned.
Amazon Pages will allow users to search a fulltext database containing the contents of potentially hundreds of thousands of books. The service is closely related to Amazon's wildly successful "Look Inside" program by which users can view the cover materials, index, and about four or five pages of a book's content.
