I have always wondered who was the all-time home run king before Babe Ruth and the year that Ruth took over the lead.

How many home runs did the Babe have at that point?

Jim Alexander

Brandon, Fla.

On July 6, 1921, Ruth hit his 137th career homer to become the major leagues' all-time home run leader. The previous record holder with 136 was Roger Connor who played from 1880 through 1897.

I really enjoyed the article in the December issue on the knuckleball. The career stats of the top purveyors of this pitch were very interesting.

As a baseball fan for more than 60 years, I recall that in the mid-1940s the old Washington Senators had an entire starting rotation of four knuckleballers, notably right-handers Dutch Leonard, Roger Wolff and Johnny Niggeling along with a lefty, Mickey Haefner.
