On Rafael Palmeiro's violation of MLB's steroids policy:
Generally, it's a huge, huge disappointment. I think when you're one of the great players of the past, it cuts deeper. The price wasn't paid like it should have been paid to be recognized as a great athlete.
I'm deeply hurt. I think (Palmeiro) is shamed. I think the scar on the game embarrasses the game and offends people. I think the American public has created a mental asterisk for players who played in this era. There's a cloud around most of the players who have had outstanding performances and taken 25 home runs to 50, to 60. There are players who have played up to age 40 who hit 120 home runs in two seasons. The greatest of the game, players who are a cut above the greats--Mays, Aaron, Ruth, Gehrig, Frank Robinson--those players all faded in the end of their careers. So when you see (older players excelling), you know. However, the denials are there. People continue to say, "Well, you know, this may have been the first time. He just probably did it a couple of weeks ago. So, he's still a Hall of Famer."
