William Faris of Annapolis has long been recognized as "the most picturesque figure among eighteenth-century Maryland silversmiths." (1) In addition to being a silversmith, he was a "watch maker, clock maker, designer, portrait painter, cabinet maker, tulip grower, tavern keeper, dentist, diarist and gossip, [who] arrests and deserves our attention." (2) This article will examine his work as a silversmith and analyze the drawings from his shop, the only ones known to survive from a colonial American silver shop.
