Trained staffers test the 10,000-square-foot, 100-jet spraypark daily. On some days, they test multiple times. In the four years since the now infamous Seneca Lake State Park built the first state-run spraypark, it never had any major problems--until this past summer.
In late July, nearly 4,000 people developed a gastrointestinal illness after visiting the spraypark in Geneva, N.Y. One after another, they suffered bouts of stomach cramping, fevers, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and related symptoms. The culprit? Cryptosporidium, which was found in two storage tanks that supply water to the water attraction.
