8th-grader pens a winning essay.(B SECTION)

Jackson Barnett, an eighth-grader at Port Charlotte Middle School, has won the local Patriot's Pen Essay Contest.

Jackson received a check for $100 and his essay will be forwarded to district level.

This year's theme was "Who Are Today's Patriots?" The youth essay-writing contest is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and is a nationwide competition for grades six through eight.

VFW Post 5690 sponsored the local essay contest, receiving entries from all the middle schools, both public and private, according to Post Commander Frank Valora.
