This February, McDonald's started displaying nutritional information on its food wrappers. The new packaging shows the number of calories (unit of energy) and the percent daily values (%DV) of nutrients in the food. The %DV compares the amount of each nutrient, such as fat and sodium, in the food with the recommended amount that a person should consume, based on a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet.
"Having access to this information is the first step toward making better [food] choices," says Linda Van Horn, a nutritionist at Northwestern University in Illinois.
