Peter Frank is a 15-year-old from Pasadena, California, who went on vacation with his family to Hawaii this past July. On a helicopter tour over the lava fields surrounding the volcanoes of Waimea, Peter noticed something unusual on the ground. He described a "strange green glint" that stood out in contrast to the stark, gray lava that was devoid of vegetation. He asked the pilot to descend for a closer look.

"I knew that people used reflective stuff to get attention," Peter told the Pasadena Star-News. "But I thought the weird light was probably a tin can or something. It wasn't until we got close up that we saw him waving his arms and shaking trees."

The man on the ground was Gilbert Dewey Gaedcke III of Austin, Texas. Gaedcke had been lost in the lava fields for five days and had survived by squeezing tree moss to extract small amounts of drinking water.
