John Kenny has been a successful Towson, Maryland, attorney for 35 years. On the morning of June 17, he was walking from his law office to a nearby church to attend the 8:30 service, but he never got to his destination. A flurry of activity alongside a nearby SUV attracted Kenny's attention. As he got closer, he noticed a man leaning into the vehicle, apparently beating someone inside.

"I didn't know if he was beating a man or a woman. I originally thought it was a guy. That's why I got involved because [the assailant] was hitting them hard enough to kill them," Kenny told a reporter for the Steubenville (Ohio) Herald-Star.

The victim proved to be a 24-year-old woman, Lesley Dunlap, and her attacker was later identified as 25-year-old Jeffrey Ricardo Jones, Jr., her ex-boyfriend. Jones had followed her to her workplace on the morning of the attack and had used a hammer to smash her car's windows. He then dragged her from her car and into his SUV.
