Seven-year-old Sadiq Hammadi and six-year-old Abdidamnan Mbwer are cousins from Salt Lake City. On the afternoon of April 17, while playing in a riverside park, Abdidamnan fell into the icy cold, rapidly flowing waters of the Jordan River. As playmates ran for help, Sadiq, who could not swim, jumped in after his cousin.
Off-duty Salt Lake City police detective Kevin Joiner and off-duty officer Brian Bridge happened to be nearby, training their horses for a mounted police class. They spotted a group of children waving their arms and shouting in a language they did not understand, which turned out to be Somalian. But they did recognize the word "trouble."
