Andy Roddick is well known to tennis fans. Since 2001, he has compiled a singles record of 271-84, won 17 singles titles, and earned $8.25 million in prize money.
In May 2004, while playing in the Italian Open, Roddick showed that his ability to perform under pressure was not limited to the tennis court. Along with some 30 other players, Roddick was staying at Rome's five-star Parco dei Principe hotel, located near the famous Villa Borghese park. Shortly after 5 a.m on May 1, a fire broke out in the hotel, and guests sought escape on the rooftop.
Witnesses praised Roddick for his part in helping other guests find their way to the roof. "Roddick helped people onto the roof," Association of Tennis Professionals spokesman Nicola Arzani told the press at the time. "Several of the players had a real fright. I talked to a few of them this morning." Roddick also helped save a Dutch couple by catching them as they jumped onto his balcony from the floor above his.
