Growing up during the Great Depression, I learned a lot from the pulp magazines. I was fond of Doc Savage, The Shadow, and stories about the West.
Zane Grey, Max Brand and Luke Short wrote of the West. Then, later, along came Louis L'Amour, who introduced me to The Sacketts. He was the best. To me, Last of the Breed and the movie Conagher, with Sam Elliott, are my favorites.
