In Mosul, one of the key Iraqi cities "liberated" by the U.S.-led invasion, leaders of the dwindling Christian population are considering the creation of militia units to protect themselves against attacks by radical Muslim groups.
"As Iraq's turmoil deepens, religious tolerance has lessened," noted a December 12 Knight-Ridder report from Iraq. "Christians in Mosul and Baghdad report receiving pamphlets [from radical Muslims] ordering women to cover up for modesty."
"Other forms of pressure and threats include pressure to sell lands, the coercion of women to wear veils, and the abduction of women for marriage against their will," said a statement issued in November by a coalition representing 11 Middle Eastern Christian groups.
