SKULD P'I Club is about to open an office in Moscow as part of its increasing focus on tonnage linked to the Baltic and eastern European region, writes James Brewer.

Its establishment of a direct presence is a challenge to other member organisations of the International Group of P'I Clubs, several of whom have representatives employed by third parties in Russia and its neighbours, or visit frequently from head office.

Skuld is recruiting experts to work in marketing from the new Moscow base, while keeping underwriting and claims services to relevant members directed from Oslo.

The mutual has built a big membership in the wider geographical region, with the entry of substantial fleets including important parts of Sovcomflot, Lithuanian Shipping, Lukoil and Northern Shipping, and the whole of Latvian Shipping, the latter a gain in the February 2006 renewals.

'We want to be close to our members,' said a Skuld management official.'We demonstrated a similar strategy ...
