GEMPLUS TO SUPPLY 1 MILLION ID CARDS FOR U.S. DEFENSE DEPARTMENT

Gemplus International, a France-based smart card company, will supply 1 million smart cards to the U.S. Defense Department for its identification card program known as the Common Access Card. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The cards will be shipped to BearingPoint Inc., an integrator for the CAC card. Gemplus says it has already shipped more than 1 million of its cards for the CAC program under previous orders. This new order is for contact cards with 64 kilobytes of rewriteable memory.
