I drive a 2003 Toyota Prius. I'm able to equal, and sometimes exceed, the EPA mileage by paying attention to what I'm doing. I've done this with every vehicle I've owned. I consider high mpg a challenge. I do not inflate the tires more than stated in the manual, and I don't engage in mpg tricks. I anticipate traffic pattern shifts and stops, and drive as if my life, and the lives of my occupants, depends on my actions.

How you drive affects fuel economy. A display in the Toyota Prius and other hybrids shows which power source is being used, allowing the driver to change driving habits to achieve better fuel economy. Our tests are always run the same way so that we can compare vehicles. We see worse fuel economy in the stop-and-go traffic of the city and better economy on the highway.
