Once upon a time, shortly after dinosaurs roamed the earth, there was one kind of Coke and one kind of Pepsi. And now? Twenty-eight. A recent addition to the lineup, Coca-Cola Zero, is supposed to taste like Coca-Cola Classic and is aimed at younger customers, especially men, who may not want to drink a soda whose first name is "Diet." Coke Zero is sweetened with a blend of NutraSweet and acesulfame potassium (a.k.a. Ace-K). Oddly enough, that blend sweetened Pepsi One until recently, when the company switched to a Splenda/Ace-K blend.
Is this niche-marketing run amok, or is there a reason for the sea of soda? We sponsored a three-day taste-off of six colas to find out whether the average Joe and Jill could taste any difference or had a preference. As many as 127 staff members per day tried the chilled, unmarked sodas. Staff members could discern differences, but those were slight and varied with the person doing the tasting. Here's how the sodas stacked up:
Day One. Coke Zero vs. Diet Coke vs. Diet Coke with Splenda. Our staff tasters granted a slight edge to Diet Coke and Diet Coke with Splenda.
Day Two. Coca-Cola Zero vs. Coca-Cola Classic. Tasters tended to prefer Coca-Cola Classic.
Day Three. Diet Pepsi vs. Pepsi One. Tasters gave a slight edge to One.
The bottom line. Laugh at 28 colas if you will, but our tasters could discern a slight difference among the six they ...
