Candle fires, which peak in December, tripled in the U.S. between 1990 and 2002. In 2002, the most recent year for which figures exist, candles caused 18,000 fires and 130 civilian deaths, says the National Fire Protection Association. Follow these tips:
* Keep candles at least a foot away from combustible materials, out of the reach of children and pets, and away from drafts.
* Don't leave a burning candle unattended.
* Keep candles away from bedding: 40 percent of candle fires start in bedrooms.
