Like sports, politics is never out of season. And while Texans have been picking candidates for November's local, state and congressional elections, the national political world already is fixated on 2008 presidential politics.
President Bush is barely into the second year of his second term, but the battle to succeed him three years hence is well under way. Witness the hectic travel schedules by a dozen hopefuls in each party to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
After all, since Jimmy Carter, early starters have tended to win. But it may be a bit much to tout the straw poll at this weekend's GOP gathering in Memphis as the first big test for Republican hopefuls.
