The specter of bird flu has been hogging the headlines lately, but regular flu is still as debilitating and potentially deadly as ever. As we went to press, there seemed to be sufficient flu-vaccine supplies. Here's what else you need to know about fending off the flu.
Does the regular flu vaccine protect against bird flu?
No. And there's currently no other available vaccine for bird flu. However, that illness may be somewhat treatable with antiviral drugs (see the last question below), and some researchers are recommending their use to prevent bird flu. For more information, go to www.cdc.gov/flu/avian.
Who needs the vaccine?
It's a good idea for anyone concerned about getting the flu. But it's especially important for the following groups, who are most likely to develop complications or spread the flu to vulnerable people:
* Adults age 65 and older.
* Long-term-care residents.
