Mar. 8--The Santa Barbara Region Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "business mission and tour of China" that departs this week, reflecting a worldwide fascination with a country that has mesmerized the West with its size and scale -- and, most recently, the explosive pace of its economic development.

The first group of a total of 145 local residents on the trip is set to leave Santa Barbara this evening for Los Angeles, where they will board the 1 a.m. flight to Beijing, touching down in the Chinese capital about 13 hours later. A second group will follow about 12 hours later.
