So you've heard the story about the coach and the small town and the utterly wacko fans who live for game day and proudly name kids after the man entrusted with their 365day obsession. Coach can't walk to the five-and-dime without someone stopping and chatting. Or, worse yet, analyzing and begging.
Well, coach's wife just had a baby girl--a sweet little button named Ryan. She doesn't sleep--they don't sleep; shoot, every parent goes through it. Coach needs a break, somewhere to stick it in neutral and decompress without the overwhelming stature of the most recognized and scrutinized man in all of Tuscaloosa in tow.
"I found a place," Mike Shula says. "I was at a Chinese takeout place the other day."
Hey, this is all no exaggeration.
After all the fidgeting and fretting, defused and disgraced Alabama may have stumbled upon a once-in-a-lifetime coach while simply looking for something or someone only to deflect punches to the gut. In the past six years, the Tide has hit rock bottom four times--if that's even possible:
* 2000. Former coach Mike DuBose's affair with his secretary and eventual firing.
* 2002. Stinging probation and damaging scholarship losses.
