BUFFALO BILLS

CAP SPACE: The team is about $7 million under the salary cap. Don't look for any blockbuster signings, but the Bills will be players. MOVING ON: Duke Preston is ready to take over at center in his second season, so Trey Teague probably won't return. Preston is smart and filled in capably at guard last season. WR Eric Moulds could be released, and WR Josh Reed probably won't be back after failing to meet expectations. The team already has replacement options in Roscoe Pettish, who has big-play speed, and Sam Aiken, who has good size and toughness. DT Ron Edwards' durability is a concern, and he could be replaced by Justin Bannon, who isn't as talented as Edwards but has a nonstop motor. TARGETS: Upgrading both lines is a priority. Eagles RT Jon Runyan is a rugged run blocker who would fit in well. Falcons LT Kevin Shaffer has his best years in front of him. The team still is searching for a replacement for DT Pat Williams, who left a year ago. It will look at DTs Grady Jackson (Packers) and Ryan Pickett (Rams). Both can occupy blockers and would free DT Sam Adams to attack upfield, which is his specialty. if Moulds and Reed leave, it would be nice to add a veteran to complement rising star WR Lee Evans. The Patriots' David Givens has strength, deceptive quickness and a knack for getting open. Another option is the Browns' Antonio Bryant, who is big, productive and tough but has character questions. The team wants to retain DE Ryan Denney, a top backup who can play the run and has improved as a pass rusher.--Allen Wilson

MIAMI DOLPHINS

CAP SPACE: Several relatively easy cuts will get the team beneath the cap-possibly $8 million under-and give it room to shop. Defensive back and quarterback figure to be the key positions addressed. MOVING ON: Potential losses in the secondary, such as SS Tebucky Jones, CB Sam Madison and CB Reggie Howard, will be difficult to overcome because of the nature of the defense. Coach Nick Saban runs a complex series of coverages that are difficult to learn. The rebuilding in the secondary will be even tougher if FS Lance Schulters is not re-signed. The team might release starting QB Gus Frerotte and LT Damion McIntosh, and backup QB Sage Rosenfels and backup OT Stockar McDougle are free agents. TARGETS: To fill holes in the secondary, the Dolphins could pursue Rams SS Adam Archuleta or Titans SS Tank Williams. They could pick up a number of solid backup players, such as Jaguars CB Terry Cousin, who was with the team in 2001 and would be a solid upgrade over Howard as the third or fourth corner. If they can clear enough cap space, they also could have interest in former Jets CB Ty Law, who showed last season he still has the skills to be effective. Law tied for the league lead with 10 interceptions. Another expensive target could be Saints C LeCharles Bentley, and the team also is expected to talk to Chargers QB Drew Brees. The potential suspension of RB Ricky Williams makes it likely versatile Sammy Morris and Travis Minor will be re-signed as backups to Ronnie Brown.--Jason Cole

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

CAP SPACE: The Patriots are about $3 million under the salary cap and figure to trim more to clear room for any deals. Whether they re-sign WR David Givens or K Adam Vinatleri will dictate how busy they get. MOVING ON: Givens and Vinatieri pose big problems for the ...
