General contractors are constantly coming up with new and better ways to get what they want from subcontractors. Most of their efforts reside in the bid documents by using some ingenious ways to cause the subcontractor to incriminate himself. By signing the bid form, the sub is painting himself into a corner that will cover him in red ink before the job is over.
GCs include the 30-40 page subcontract in the bid documents, with all its addenda, exhibits, and attachments that involve another 100-200 pages, all written in their favor. They are counting on the sub not reading all those pages because if he did, he wouldn't sign.
