London - Work on the ID card project in Hong Kong could provide the UK with many valuable lessons says MAOSCO, the UK based industry consortium that governs MULTOS, the first open-standard, high security, multi-application operating system for smart cards. The Hong Kong ID project has been successful, well received by the public, and is delivering many Government services more simply and conveniently, helping to improve people's lives.
Moreover, the project has been implemented cost effectively and with a minimum of technical problems by using `best in class` technology that is proven and not overly ambitious, says MAOSCO.
Steve Everhard, CEO of MAOSCO says: "For a national ID card to be introduced, people must trust that the ID card will enhance their lives by protecting them from identity theft, making interaction with Government convenient and more secure, and without reducing their privacy. The Hong Kong Smart ID card achieves all of these objectives."
The Hong Kong Smart ID card is being issued to all 6.8 million citizens. For those citizens who cross the frontier with mainland China - some quarter of a million people every day - the Smart ID card is reducing their waiting times to pass through immigration control from sometimes hours, to minutes. Using an automated gate system, the traveller inserts their Smart ID card and presents a finger to the fingerprint sensor. If the image stored on the card, and the image captured by the reader match, the gate opens and the traveller passes without the need to queue up.
The Smart ID card also helps put an end to identity theft. Stolen ID cards can no longer be used by impostors to access services because their fingerprint will not match...
