besides buying a new home, choosing where to educate your children may be one of the most important decisions you face. Fortunately, you'll find a world of choices in Sarasota and Manatee, where more than 80 elementary, middle and high schools serve nearly 70,000 students. The region also offers scores of private schools, from parochial institutions to college-prep academies. To help you determine the best place for your children, Homebuyer has collected some of the more useful numbers for public schools in our area. The figures, from the Florida Department of Education's School Indicators Report for the school year 2001-2002 (the latest available at press time), may also be viewed with much more data on the department's Web site: http://info.doe.state.fl.fsir2001/. Please note that school grades are for year 2003. To make your final choice, after you've viewed these numbers, always visit potential schools and interview their personnel and parents of other children who attend.
