THE LODGER 
 
   Sometimes at night I smell toast 
   and I know the old priest 
   is making breakfast. 
   He thinks I don't know he lives here 
   rising when I sleep, a shadow 
   shuffling round the kitchen 
   with the lights off 
   From time to time a whiff from a cigarette 
   rises from beneath my room. 
   I imagine him down there crouched 
   on the old mattress. 
 
   He is my better half
