SIR: Frank Devine's reflections on reading aloud (September 2004) with its intimations of domestic bliss with the former Jacqueline Magee over more than forty years made me wonder whether the former Ross Williams and I have been missing out on something over our even longer wedded state. Then it occurred to me that I could perhaps add something to Frank's prescription.

I have not read to my spouse as in the Devine model. But we have recently discovered the increasingly rich resource of taped books which we can listen to while sitting in our ear. A few weeks ago we listened to Owen Harries' Boyer Lectures en route to Brisbane. We found this excellent and it provided material for discussion ...
