SIR: Bern Brent admits (Letters, September 2004) that he has not read The Howard Years, and perhaps it would be a good idea if he did before offering judgment on its contents. But that said, his approach to evaluating the impact of the Howard policies of detention without trial highlights an important methodological issue. Mr Brent essentially draws on his own recollections of being detained during the Second World War, which, he states, "did me more good than harm". He also states that he is "not aware that any of us suffered ill-effects arising from these days".

Any serious social scientist would tell him that this kind of loosely anecdotal approach does not provide a solid basis for drawing wider conclusions since different individuals display varying degrees of personal resilience.
