Merle E. Blair
Merle E. "Gene" Blair, 80, Punta Gorda, died Oct. 8, 2004.
He was born March 14, 1924, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, moved to Fort Myers in 1972 from there, and came to Charlotte County in 1975. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1948 with a degree in advertising journalism. He served in the Army during World War II. He was an advertising sales executive and worked for the Fort Myers News Press and The Shopping Guide of Punta Gorda and retired from the Charlotte Sun in 1988. He was the former manager and co-owner of Regent Theatre of Cedar Falls. He was a member of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 2606 of Punta Gorda, and American Legion Post 110 of Port Charlotte. He was a former member of the Kingsway Country Club of Lake Suzy, the Punta Gorda Country Club and the Punta Gorda Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirley M.; a daughter, Barbara Ann Giesey of Loveland, Colo.; a son, Douglas of Lawrence, Kan.; a brother, Maynard of Fort Myers; three grandchildren and a great- grandchild.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls. Burial, with military honors by the Army, will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls.
