Equities slipped lower in early trade in London on Monday amid weakness in the telecoms, pharmaceuticals and banking sectors. The FTSE 100 lost 5 points at 4,693.8 while the mid-cap FTSE 250 lost 13 points at 6,366.2 by 0800 GMT. Manchester United shares rose 2.4 per cent after weekend press reports that John Magnier and JP McManus, the Irish horse-racing millionaires, confirmed that an 'unsolicited contact' had been made for their 28.9pc stake in the football club by Malcolm Glazer, the US sports tycoon.
