Only on Halloween can a wholesome Baptist church get away with morphing into a haunted devil's den.

It's a holiday when the cuddliest of characters at family amusement parks drop their good garb to reveal their inner villains. But when inhibitions are cast aside, it's often wise to know your own personal comfort level.

While some establishments push the concept of horror further than many people can stomach, others opt to trade terrorizing stunts for much tamer fare. Ghoulish makeup and costumes aren't embraced everywhere, and neither are impressionable youngsters.

Here's a list of Halloween events appropriate for varying age groups in Sarasota and surrounding cities:

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Billed as a "family-friendly celebration of gentle chills and thrills" by Disney World spokesman David Brady, this event features Disney characters dressed in Halloween regalia and tons of trick-or-treating.

Evenings include Mickey's Boo-to-You Halloween Parade, Mickey's Mouse-Ka-Rade costume parties and a fireworks display above Cinderella Castle.

Watch for the headless horseman from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" who rides down Main Street just before the parade.
