Car bombs kill 48 in Iraq
INSURGENTS detonated three car bombs near a US military convoy in Baghdad, killing 41 people, 34 of them children, and wounding scores. In two other attacks, a suicide bomber blew up his vehicle near a US checkpoint outside the capital, killing two policemen and a US soldier, and a car bomb killed four people in the restive northern Iraq town of Tal Afar.
Elections will go ahead in Iraq next January as planned, despite the violence ravaging the country, interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said. He condemned as 'repugnant' the kidnapping of Briton Kenneth Bigley.
TWELVE Palestinians and three Israelis were killed as tanks thrust deep into the Gaza Strip's largest refugee camp for the first time after a rocket attack killed two Israeli children in a border town.
In one of Gaza's bloodiest days for months, gunmen shot dead an Israeli soldier and a woman jogger, and Israeli forces raiding the Jabalya camp killed at least six militants plus several civilians during fierce fighting.
